Method 1: Capture Entire Screen

Take Full Screen Screenshot

  1. Press + Shift + 3 all at once
  2. You'll hear a camera shutter sound (if your sound is on)
  3. A thumbnail appears briefly in the corner of your screen
  4. The screenshot is automatically saved to your desktop!
  5. Click the thumbnail to edit, or wait a few seconds for it to save

Copy to Clipboard Instead (Don't Save)

  1. Press + Control + Shift + 3
  2. Screenshot is copied to clipboard
  3. Paste into any app with + V

Method 2: Capture Selected Portion

Select Any Area to Capture

  1. Press + Shift + 4
  2. Your cursor becomes a crosshair with coordinates
  3. Click and drag to select the area you want to capture
  4. Release to take the screenshot
  5. It saves to your desktop automatically

  • Hold Space: Locks in size and lets you move the selection

Where Screenshots Are Saved

Default Location

By default, screenshots save to your Desktop with the filename format:

Change Save Location

You can also use Terminal commands to change defaults:
